Laurel Walter was born on November 27, 1935, to Rudolph and Irene (Brockopp) Riedel in Parkers Prairie. He was baptized on December 31, 1935, by Pastor August Sieving, having sponsors: Walter Brockopp and Bertha Gumm.  He was confirmed in the Christian faith on May 29, 1949, his verse was John 10:27,28. Laurel attended school in Parkers Prairie through the 10th grade, as he wanted to be a farmer, he went to work with his dad on the family farm. Laurel was united in marriage to Jurlienne Froemming on January 13, 1956, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Parkers Prairie with Pastor Fred A. Meyer.  Their Bible verse was Ruth 1:16, “Wither thou goest, I will go and where thou lodgest, I will lodge, thy people shall be my people and thy God my God.”

Laurel was a farmer who had an interest in tractors and machines to manage his fields. He also enjoyed cutting wood, both for lumber (building the barn) and for firewood. After selling the farm, he turned his interest into building furniture for resale, for his daughter’s homes, and all the furniture in Immanuel Lutheran Church’s library. He enjoyed traveling on his 4-wheeler to check on his land and give his grandkids rides, and deer hunting with his nephews.  He was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, served on the finance committee for six years, and attended the Tuesday morning Bible study. Laurel trusted in Jesus to forgive his sins and to give him eternal life. Prior to his death, Laurel was able to talk to his family about remaining faithful to Jesus to the end.  He talked to each one and expressed his love for them.  He spoke of his longing to meet Jesus and being ready to be held by his Savior.

Laurel loved music and played piano and accordion to entertain his family and enjoyed fun times with his daughters who played along on the piano.  He was blessed to travel with his wife to Germany, Alaska, an Egypt/Jerusalem tour and Australia.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sherry Lee Riedel; parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna (Stan) Frendin, Arlis (Donald Bremmer and Arnie Johnson), Nila (Earl) Erlander, Mabel “Mibs” (Richard) Spearing, and Janice (Carl) Gabriel; and great-nephew, Zachary Erlander, son of Gary.
