Obituary

Dean H. Swanson, age 78, of Parkers Prairie, died on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at St. William’s Living Center in Parkers Prairie.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at Faith Lutheran Church in Miltona with Rev. John Riggle officiating. Music is provided by pianist, Kevin Lee. Interment will take place at Veblen Cemetery in Veblen, South Dakota at a later date. A recording of Dean’s service will be available on his obituary page on the funeral home website following the service.

Visitation is from 5-7 p.m., Monday, April 26, at Lind Family Funeral Home in Parkers Prairie and will continue one hour prior to the service.

Dean Harland was born on May 23, 1942, to Nels Fritjof “Fritz” and Eleanora (Anderson) Swanson in Veblen, South Dakota. He was baptized in June 1942 and confirmed in Veblen. Dean graduated from Veblen High School and continued his education at Concordia College in Moorhead for one year. He transferred to Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree and Master’s Degree in Social Studies. Following his education he taught country school near Veblen. Dean moved to Parkers Prairie where he continued his teaching career in English and Social Studies until his retirement. During the summers he joined his sister and brother-in-law working in their concession stand at many fairs and craft shows. Dean taught as a substitute teacher in the area schools and Alexandria Technical College in his retirement. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Miltona. He was a member of the Northwest Synod of the ELCA Lutheran Church for many years and longtime member of Synod Worship Committee. Dean was also a member of the National Education Association and the Minnesota Educator Academy. Dean enjoyed playing the organ at First Lutheran Church in Parkers Prairie and St. Williams Living Center for many years. He also enjoyed reading, singing in the church choir, being chairman of hymn selection committee, and helping plan worship services at First Lutheran Church for over 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; paternal grandparents, Nels and Marie Swanson; maternal grandparents, Charles and Ida Anderson; and brothers, Charles, Willis, Dale, and Waldon.

Dean is survived by his twin sister, Nadine Wermager of Burnsville; nephew, Jeff (Stacy) Wermager and their children, Braden and Gavin of St. Michael; niece, Angela (Ira) Mitchell and their children, Field, Owen and Asher of Eagan; sister-in-law, Pat Swanson of Wahpeton, North Dakota; and many other nieces and nephews.
