Charlotte Hjelm

Charlotte L. “Char” Hjelm, age 87, of Parkers Prairie, peacefully passed on Friday, November 22, 2019, at Knute Nelson with her family by her side.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Parkers Prairie with Rev. Kirk Lee officiating. Music is provided by organist, Maureen Diedrich and vocalist, Charlie Christopherson. Interment will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Miltona.

A visitation will be 4-7 pm., Monday at Lind Family Funeral Home in Alexandria and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Known to friends and family as Char, she was born on the 23rd of October, 1932, in Parkers Prairie to Archie and Bertha (Jahnke) Uhde. She graduated from Parkers Prairie High School. After spending her early adulthood in Chicago as a bookkeeper, she returned to Minnesota to work for AP Hustad. A car accident shortly thereafter proved life changing. Told that she could no longer work at a desk, she took a job as a waitress at Chet’s Lakeside Inn. There, she fell in love and married the namesake and owner, and, together, they raised three daughters: Cheri, Cindy, and Carolea.

Char, the proclaimed “Chicken Queen of Lake Irene”, found her life’s bliss in her family and restaurant, an intertwined institution. Chet’s has been a family-run restaurant for the past 66 years, employing her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and preserving traditions in service to generations of community members.

In her spare time, Char voraciously read, cheered on her favorite football teams, and excitedly watched television game shows. She also loved to collect earrings and keychains and oftentimes could be found at the casino perched by her favorite slot machines. In more recent years, she loved watching her great-grandchildren in dance recitals and wrestling matches.

Char is preceded in death by her husband, Chester (Chet); two daughters, Cheri and Carolea; and parents, Archie and Bertha.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Leon) Wunderlich of Parkers Prairie; two grandchildren, Sheila (Dusty) Schilling and Scotty (Julie) Wunderlich; and great-grandchildren, Brooke and Luke Schilling.

Pallbearers are Leon Wunderlich, Scotty Wunderlich, Dusty Schilling, Michael Anderson, Jon Cecil Anderson and Donny Kalpin.  Honorary pallbearers are Char’s great-grandchildren, Brooke and Luke Schilling.
