Waldon L. "Wally" Current, age 85, of Alexandria, died Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at his home surrounded by family.
Funeral Services are 11:30 a.m., Monday, September 28, 2015, at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria with Rev. David Hinz and Rev. Geoff Gronewold officiating. Music is provided by organist, Irma Brockberg and soloist, Gary Current. Burial is at Nelson Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Minnesota Honor Guard, Alexandria American Legion Post #87, Alexandria VFW Post #936, and VVA Rifle Squad Chapter 235.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m., Sunday, at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Waldon Lee Current was born September 21, 1930, to Lee and Vilia (Luck) Current in Cottonwood County. He was baptized February 1, 1931, and confirmed at Sanborn United Methodist Church in Sanborn. He attended country school before he graduated from Sanborn High School in 1948. Following his education he moved to Bertha where he worked as a truck driver. Wally was united in marriage to Maxine Carlson on February 3, 1952, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bertha. Within a few weeks after their marriage, Wally entered into the U.S. Army where he was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas and Kaiserstlautern, West Germany. Following his honorable discharge he returned to live in the communities of Wadena, Northfield and Savage. He and his family moved to Osseo in 1960, where Wally worked as a machinist. In 1972, Wally and his best friend, Ray Rooney, became business partners and started R&W Welding. They owned and operated the business until passing their business onto the next generation in 1991. In 1994, Wally and Maxine moved to their lake home on Lake Jessie in Alexandria. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria and was a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Osseo. He was a member of Golden Brothers Lions Club in Alexandria, Osseo American Legion and Osseo Lions Club. Wally enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting with his family, being on the lake and driving his pontoon, and playing dart ball with the Men's Club at Zion Lutheran Church. He especially loved spending time with his family and was the perfect family man.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Glenn; and son-in-law, Mark Brooks.
Wally is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maxine; three children, Bonnie Brooks of Alexandria, Vicki (Greg) Westgaard of Big Lake and Gary (Roxanne) Current of Dayton; brother, Dale (Joann) Current of Bertha; six grandchildren, Miles (Kim) Brooks, Nathan (Rosemara) Brooks, Joshua (Katia) Westgaard, Brandon (Nikki) Westgaard, Lyndsay (Tony) Ampe and Brendan (Mallory) Current; 11 great-grandchildren, Miles, Jr. and Anna Brooks, Kaden and Arianna Brooks, Sofia and Jackson Westgaard, Mariah, Kale and Brennen Westgaard, Elin and Axel Current; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are his grandchildren.
Family prefers memorials to Zion Lutheran Church or Douglas County Hospice.
