Vernon L. Foner, age 83, of Alexandria, died on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at his home, under the care of Hospice of Douglas County.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Lind Family Funeral Home in Alexandria. Lunch and fellowship with follow the service.
The visitation is one hour prior to the service.
Vernon Leroy Foner was born on January 4, 1943, to Julius and Irene (Cummins) Foner in Glenwood. At the age of twelve he made his choice to follow Jesus and was baptized a year later. Vernon graduated from Villard High School in 1962. After his father’s tractor accident, he bought his father’s dairy herd and machinery. Vernon married the love of his life, Lorene Mote on March 21, 1970, and together they purchased the farm. To this union, four children were born, Melissa, Brian, Joel, and Annie.
They sold their dairy cattle in 1997, the machinery in 1999, and the farm in 2006, and moved to a home near Alexandria. Vern valued many fellowship meetings in their home and many potlucks. He continued painting homes, interiors, and outbuildings including a few three-story barns and a multitude of decks until 2013. With a little camper on the pickup Vern and Lorene enjoyed traveling, especially a five-week trip through North Dakota, Montana, Oregon, Utah, California, Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa. They visited as many national parks as possible. He loved gardening, reading his Bible, and spending time with family. A special memory of Vern was when he built a buggy that he took to parades with grandkids onboard to throw candy. Vern’s humor was one-of-a-kind - his stories and keen wit will be missed!
Vern was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis on February 14, 2019. He slowly declined and in September 2024, they sold their lovely home and moved into an apartment. They enjoyed good times and new friends they made there.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Marvin, David, Richard, Merlin, and Raymond.
Vern is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorene; children, Melissa “Missy” Foner of Minnesota, Brian (Kris) Foner of Minnesota, Joel (Alayna) Foner of Montana, and Annie (Len) Green of Hawaii; nine grandchildren, Miranda, Kaylee (Khanh), Brayden, Aedan (Alanah), Emmett (Hannah), Crater (Tatianna), Carmandy, Vienna, and Cavan; and one great granddaughter, June.
Casket bearers are Brian Foner, Joel Foner, Melissa Foner, Aedan Foner, Emmett Foner, Crater Woods, Miranda Quick and Kaylee Quick. Honorary pallbearers, Carmandy Foner, Vienna Foner, Cavan Foner, and Brayden Foner.
