Thomas Curtis Schofield was born on February 6, 1953, to Curtis Earl and Luella Catherine (Anderson) Schofield in Fairmont. He grew up on a farm in Madelia, with his siblings, Gail, Kathy, and Donald and he enjoyed being in the farm environment. He worked in the fields walking the soybeans to pull weeds, along with helping to raise and care for the farm animals. He spent many hours in the woods, pastures, and sloughs.
As a teenager, he spent much of his spare time helping his father in the fields by driving tractor, discing, and plowing. He loved spending hours cultivating the fields and also helped his Uncle Herman Anderson tile the slough on his farm.
Tom attended Faith Lutheran Church in Madelia, where his faith grew and he was confirmed.
After high school, Tom went to Bemidji State University from September 1971 to June 1972. Tom was studying as a history major.
Next, he enlisted in the United States Army for three years, spending two and a half of those years stationed near Nuremberg, Germany. He served as a company clerk for a helicopter supply unit and was responsible for generating and overseeing paperwork for the military unit. Tom qualified as a sharpshooter during his service and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his exemplary service.
Following an honorable discharge from the Army, he attended the University of Minnesota, Mankato, and graduated with a degree in Management, Marketing, and Industrial Relations. He worked at T.O. Plastics in Minneapolis and Heartland Industries in Alexandria before becoming a full-time United States Postal Service employee in Alexandria. Tom spent 38 years working as a letter carrier and was known and loved by many patrons in the community. He was a carrier on every route in town.
Tom met the love of his life, Karen Marie Landsverk, and they were married on July 26, 1980. They made their home in Alexandria, where they raised their two sons, Jonathan Thomas and Joel Curtis. Family was vitally important to Tom, and he cherished his time with them. He loved playing games, attending sporting activities, camping at the cabins in Two Harbors, hiking, traveling, gardening, doing school projects with his children and grandchildren, spending time on the farm in Madelia, and discussing topics related to history. He especially loved spending time with his wife, kayaking on Lake Darling and going for long walks. This active lifestyle he shared with Karen extended his life as he struggled daily with Parkinson’s disease for approximately 15 to 20 years.
Tom went on many adventures, including trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Norway, Canada, and Mexico, along with travels to many states including Minnesota, Iowa, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Washington, and throughout the Rocky Mountain and southwestern states.
Tom’s Christian faith was very important to him, and having a saving faith in Jesus Christ was central to what he shared with others. He was an active member of Campus Crusade for Christ during his college years and spent many years serving at Alexandria Covenant Church, which was a second home to him. His knowledge of the Bible and world history was exemplary. He shared his gift for scripture with countless people as he led adult Bible studies for over 25 years in his gentle and kind way. Tom also served as a deacon and on many boards within the congregation, including the church council, call committee, adult curriculum committee, membership board, and he led membership classes for new members.
He is preceded in death by his parents Curtis and Luella (Anderson) Schofield; nephew Michael Knewtson; and cousins, Joel Anderson, Stanley Anderson, Glen Schofield, Jennifer Anderson, Doug Tronrud, and Steven Wolf.
Tom is survived by his wife of 45 years, Karen; sons, Jonathan Schofield and Joel (Samantha) Schofield; grandchildren, Avery, Charlie, Adelynn and Emmalee; sisters, Gail (Mark) Stark and Kathy (Shane Broughten) Schofield; brother, Donald (Staci) Schofield; along with nephews, nieces and a host of friends.
