Shirley Ilene was born on August 8, 1930, to Thorsten and Ruth (Larson) Peterson in Spruce Hill Township. She was raised on the family farm and attended Country School District 64. She attended high school in the surrounding area before being united in marriage to Wilhelm Friedrich “Willie” Myren on February 12, 1948, in Spruce Hill. Together they farmed and were blessed with six children, whom Shirley stayed home to raise. While raising her family, she often sang for funerals and weddings and was well known for her beautiful voice. She was also active in the Homemakers Club in Miltona. She worked at Mt. Carmel Bible Camp as a cook during the summers of 1966–1968 before transitioning to Luther Crest Bible Camp, where she served as Food Service Director and Head Cook from April 1969 until her retirement in August 1989. Her “Shirley’s Cookies” are still recognized there. After retirement, Shirley and Willie traveled and spent winters in Arizona and Texas. The couple enjoyed playing cards, especially Hand & Foot, with a group for over 20 years. After Willie’s passing in 2005, Shirley remained independent, tending to her garden and flowers and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Faith Lutheran in Miltona and First Lutheran in Parkers Prairie. Shirley was dearly loved by her children and their families, and she will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilhelm “Willie” Myren; sons-in-law, Warren Dreger and Jerry Hoaglund; and great-grandson, Caleb Kunstleben.
Shirley is survived by her six children, Mary Dreger of Sauk Centre, Sharon Hoaglund of Alexandria, Donald (Ann Domagala) Myren of Brainerd, Marilyn (Kevin) Aigner of Surprise, AZ, Ron (Char) Myren of Alexandria, and Susan (Doug) Hansen of Dalton; sisters, Marian Inwards of Parkers Prairie and Ann Oberg of Alexandria; brother, Dan (Susan) Peterson of Janesville, Wisconsin; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
