Roy Carl was born on April 11, 1957, to Florian and Lenora (Thoennes) Roers in Alexandria. Roy was the fifth of seven Roers children, and the family was raised on a farm outside of Millerville. He attended parochial school at Seven Dolors Catholic Church and completed his education at Brandon High School, graduating in 1975. In school, he was active in band and in the FFA. After high school, he pursued carpentry and earned his associate degree from Alexandria Technical College. He worked in the area for local contractors, and in 1978, he met his future wife—and the love of his life—at a dance at the “Barn” in Alexandria. He married Kathy Strelow on June 9, 1979, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Brandon. The couple lived in Alexandria for a brief time before renting a farm in Brandon, where he milked cows. In 1984, the family built a farmstead of their own, purchasing a farm in Alexandria. In 2000, Roy retired from milking cows but continued to be active farming his land. His pace didn’t slow after retiring from milking; he pursued a new venture selling furniture. He owned and operated Roers Furniture until 2007, when he was diagnosed with cancer and shifted his focus to helping others, such as local farmers and construction contractors. Throughout his career, Roy was active in his community, holding memberships with the Elks, Eagles, and Knights of Columbus. He participated in a variety of sporting leagues, in addition to serving as president of the Pro Ag Board of Directors and as a charter member of the FFA Alumni Board in Alexandria. Most recently, he became involved with the “Let’s Go Fishing” group and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Posse. He was a faithful member of the Church of St. Mary. Above all, of the many things Roy participated in, his most rewarding and devoted passion was his family. He was active in his children’s lives and delighted in attending and supporting his grandchildren’s activities. He enjoyed hunting deer, geese, and ducks on his land with them, and he also loved taking them fishing whenever he could. Each year, he also took an annual prairie dog hunting trip to South Dakota with his buddies. While he and his family wished he could continue to be a part of their lives, he was grateful for the extra time he was granted here on this earth.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Roger Strelow; brother, Robert Roers; brother-in-law, Roger Kluver; and beloved dog, Millie.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Roers of Alexandria; children, Royce (Janelle) Roers of Alexandria, Kadie (Marcus) Berscheid of Long Prairie, and Bryan (Heidi) Roers of Kensington; grandchildren, Kallista (Emmett Whempner) and Ellie (Taylor Drusch) Roers, Maxwell and Colton Berscheid, and Hailey, Rachel, and Cody Roers; siblings, Clifford (Phyllis) Roers, Joan Kluver, Lois (Mike) Hedstrom, Mary (Bob) Walter, and Donna (Jeff) Guetter; mother-in-law, Jackie Strelow; sisters-in-law, Sherri Strelow, Emily (Rich) Wilson, and Janice Roers; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
