Richard Iver was born on August 7, 1955, to Palmer and Mable (Thornbloom-Rose) Zastrow in rural Douglas County near Leaf Valley. He was baptized and confirmed at Ebenezer Lutheran Church. He attended Alexandria Public Schools and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1973. He continued his education at Ridgewater Community College to study tool and die. Richard married Mary Herzog on March 25, 1995, in Alexandria. Together they raised their four children. Richard worked for Lakeland Manufacturing and various other retail establishments before retiring in January of 2020 due to health issues. His love for his work was consistent throughout his personal life, constantly acquiring new tools and “toys” and often giving them to his loved ones when he found a new set. He was devoted to any work and personal project he took on from start to finish. He was a hard worker who prided himself in a job well done. He enjoyed watching his “programs” and spending time with his family. He was always good for a joke and provided much laughter to his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law; two infant brothers; brothers-in-law, Frankie Herzog and Dale Carlson; sister-in-law, Arlene Oelrich; two nephews and a great-nephew.

Richard is survived by his wife of 27 years, Mary Zastrow of Alexandria; children, Kristy Larson of Alexandria, Suzy Swenson of St. Paul, Justin (Kara) Swenson of Osakis, and Becky Zastrow of Alexandria; grandchildren, Katie Burkey, Spencer Larson, Chelsey and Joslyn Swenson; brother, William (Amy) Zastrow; and many nieces and nephews.

Serving as urn bearers are his grandchildren, Spencer, Katie, Chelsey, and Joslyn.
