Michael Bernard was born on March 22, 1945, to Albin and Estella (Blasius) Niewind in Richmond, Minnesota. He was baptized as an infant and received his first communion at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Roscoe, and was later confirmed at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Burnsville. Michael grew up in Roscoe where he attended a one-room schoolhouse and spent many summers outside Richmond, working on his Uncle Ben & Aunt Theresa’s farm. He graduated from Paynesville High School in 1963, where he was a four-sport gifted athlete. He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Kathryn Martha Olson on September 24, 1964, in Bessemer, Michigan. Following their marriage, they moved to the Twin Cities. They were blessed with three children and 60 years of marriage. Mike began his career at Hitchcock Industries where he worked for 25 plus years. He and Kathy purchased a 58-acre farm in Montrose in 1990. He worked an additional 15 years at Progress Casting and retired in 2005. Many of Mike’s hobbies centered around the lake cabins they owned both in Wisconsin and Minnesota where he enjoyed fishing, mowing, cutting firewood, and burning whatever he could. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage, and spending hours telling stories to his grandchildren and others. He had the gift of gab and appreciated a good joke. Mike was an avid Minnesota Sports fan and took pride in his grandchildren’s sporting activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John (Darlene) Niewind; sister, JoAnn (Leo) Ripplinger; and brother-in-law, Mike Phillipp.

Mike is survived by his wife Kathy; two daughters, Brenda (Mike) Loosbrock of Slayton, and Stephanie (Dennis) Prudhomme of Woodbury; son, Michael (fiancée, Kim) Niewind of Albertville; ten grandchildren, Bryce (Shelly) Prudhomme, Gabby (Donny) Foster, Josee (Joe) Garrison, Ben (Haydn) Loosbrock, Evan Niewind, Kyle Prudhomme, Carlee Prudhomme, Mallory Loosbrock, Maddie Niewind, and LillyAnn Niewind; six great grandchildren, Norah, Isla, Everlee, Cecelia, Reece, and William; three sisters, Carol (Denis) Holthaus of Cold Spring, Kathy Phillipp of St. Joseph, and Susie (Richard) Burg of Albany; two brothers, Chuck (Alice) Niewind of Grand Rapids, and Joey (Char) Niewind of Eagle Bend; and many nieces and nephews.
