Maxine Janet Carlson was born October 7, 1930, to Axel and Marie (McWilliams) Carlson in Hallock. She was baptized May 31, 1931, in Hallock and was confirmed May 20, 1945, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bartlett Township. She attended several schools in Minnesota and California before graduating from Bertha High School in 1948. Following graduation, she worked at the Smith Furniture Store in Wadena and learned bookkeeping skills. Maxine met the love of her life and was united in marriage to Waldon “Wally” Current on February 3, 1952, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bartlett Township. Within a few weeks of their marriage, Wally entered the U.S. Army and Maxine remained in Wadena working and anxiously awaited his return. They moved to Northfield and Savage before settling in Osseo where they lived and raised their family. After the children were all in school Maxine worked as a cook for the Osseo School District, then joined good friend and classmate Eunie Kolstad working at Sipe Brothers in Osseo, before joining the team at R&W Welding and Machine. After spending weekends at the cabin, Max and Wally moved to their home on Lake Jessie in Alexandria in 1994. Maxine was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria and was a former member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Osseo. She was involved with the Dorcas Society, LWML and played hand bells. She was a member of the Lioness Club in Osseo. Maxine enjoyed making and sharing baked goods with neighbors and friends, and you could weekly smell the fragrance of fresh baked buns. She enjoyed making special treats for Wally, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and the most requested item was of course, her famous chocolate cake. She had the magic recipe for homemade ice cream (passed down from her mom) that she and Wally made every Christmas for the family to enjoy. Grandma could mend anything, and she would often find something needing a little TLC waiting for repair. Max was a gentle woman who loved deeply and was adored by those lucky enough to meet her. The staff and residents at Windmill Ponds became her friends as did the amazing staff of Douglas County Hospice and Knute Nelson Care Center who enjoyed caring for her most recently.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Axel and Marie Carlson; husband, Wally; infant son, Glenn; son-in-law, Mark Brooks; sister and brother-in-law, Fern and Ray Nelson; parents-in-law, Lee and Vilia Current; and brother-in-law, Dale Current.
Maxine is survived by her three children, Bonnie Brooks of Alexandria, Vicki (Greg) Westgaard of Alexandria, and Gary (Roxanne) Current of Dayton; six grandchildren, Miles (Kim) Brooks, Nathan Brooks; Joshua (Katia) Westgaard, Brandon (Nikki) Westgaard, Lyndsay (Tony) Ampe; and Brendan (Mallory) Current; 14 great-grandchildren, Miles, Jr. and Anna Brooks, Kaden and Arianna Brooks; Sofia and Jackson Westgaard, Mariah, Kale and Brennen Westgaard, Strykar and Westyn Ampe; Elin, Axel, and Willa Current; sister-in-law, Joanne Current; along with several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are her grandchildren.
