Margaret C. Komes, age 94, of Alexandria, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 1, 2022, at Knute Nelson Care Center.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 2, 2022, at the Lind Family Funeral Home in Alexandria with Fr. Matthew Kuhn officiating. Providing music will be Margaret's granddaughter, Michelle Shoultz and her husband Phillip. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband Robert in the Minnesota Veteran's Cemetery in Little Falls, Minnesota.
A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Margaret Catherine was born on November 24, 1927, to George and Grace (Haughian) Papenheim on their dairy farm located near Rice Lake, Wisconsin. The youngest of five girls, her sisters called her “Babe”. She attended Rice Lake Area Schools and graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1945. She continued her education with two years of Teacher's College. She met Robert (Bob) Komes at a dance and they married on July 3, 1948. From this union, five children were born. In 1950, they moved to the Minneapolis, Minnesota, area. They purchased a dairy farm near Nelson, Minnesota, in 1965. Margaret worked briefly for Fingerhut in Alexandria and Sauk Centre. She was a wonderful homemaker, raising kids and a large garden. She loved cooking and was an especially wonderful baker. Margaret began a beloved tradition of baking Christmas cookies as a family at her home. In 2005, Margaret and Bob moved into a home in Alexandria. After Bob passed in 2011, she moved into Arabella Manor in Alexandria. She loved keeping in touch with friends and family through letters and cards. She enjoyed fishing and keeping up with current events.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son, Rob, and four sisters, Martha Huckell, Mary O'Brien, Janette Gisler and Loritta Williams.
She is survived by four children, Barbara Williams (Ben Grosz, deceased) of Alexandria, Robert (Denise Duranczyk) Komes of Stoughton, Wisconsin, David (Sally) Komes of Manahawkin, New Jersey, and Linda (Lydon) Sletto of Alexandria; five grandchildren, Dennis (Jodi) Williams, Wade (Kim) Williams, Michelle (Phillip) Shoultz, Nolan Sletto, and Rachel (Jeff) Kennedy; 10 great-grand children and several nieces and nephews.
