Leo Hoppe

Leopold J. Hoppe, age 75, of Miltona, died Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Knute-Nelson in Alexandria.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, May 6, 2011, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Miltona with Rev. William Stockman officiating. Burial will take place at Ft. Snelling Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, May 5, 2011, at the Lind Family Funeral Home in Miltona and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Leopold Junior Hoppe was born October 23, 1935, the third child to Leopold Fredrick Carl and Mabel Dorothy (Johnson) Hoppe in a log home in rural Miltona. He was baptized and confirmed at Spruce Hill Lutheran Church. He attended District #55 Country School and graduated from Alexandria Central High School in 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy from March 1956- October 1957. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Minneapolis where he worked for Sears Roebuck and Paramont Motors and met his future wife. He was united in marriage to Patrica Rae Eberle October 17, 1959, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Clarissa. Following their marriage they continued living in Minneapolis and Chaska before settling in Norwood - Young America where they raised their family and he owned and operated Leo's Body Shop for 20 years. He also worked as a welder for Nordic Track in Glencoe and drove bus for MRCI in Chaska before retiring in 2001. They returned to Miltona in 2008. Leo enjoyed bowling and loved to entertain, he never knew a stranger because everyone was a friend to him. He was a life-long dreamer and worked on projects that included his family whether it was engines or inventions.

Leo is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pat; three daughters, Kathie (Mark) Zimmerley of Eden Prairie, Julie (Greg) Switala of Big Lake and Amy Jo Hoppe of Chanhassen; a son, Jeffrey Hoppe of Minneapolis; three sisters, Dorothy (Gerald) Brockopp of Alexandria, Arlene Krebs of Eagan and Ardell Engfer of Rogers; six brothers, Wilbert (Janeal) Hoppe of Worland, Wyoming, Maynard (Kathryn) Hoppe, Gerald (Gertrude) Hoppe, Arnold (Joanie) Hoppe, Leon (Linda) Hoppe all of Miltona and Donald (Pamela) Hoppe of Parkers Prairie; special cousin, Ardene (Richard) Weberg of Coon Rapids; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, James Engfer.
