Joseph John was born on July 3, 1942, to Edward and Lucille (Schettler) Winter on the family farm in Wilmont. Joe was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Wilmont. He attended parochial school until the family moved to a farm near Nelson in 1957. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Alexandria in 1960. While attending school, Joe loved working on the family farms both in Wilmont and Nelson. Following his education, he joined the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged after six years of service. Joe was blessed with three sons, Tony, Matt, and David, from a previous marriage. He made his lifelong career working various jobs for the Ford Motor Company in St. Paul. Joe was united in marriage to Debbie Dahl on October 30, 1993, at First Lutheran Church in St. Paul, officiated by a Lutheran minister and a Catholic priest. They made their home in Stillwater, where they enjoyed traveling across the country and boating on the St. Croix River together. Joe retired from Ford after 42 years. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Stillwater. Joe was known for staying busy building and fixing many different things. He enjoyed the outdoors and taking care of his yard. Joe loved his dogs, Duke, Dimples, Daisy, and Pedals. Most of all, he loved when he could help his sons and the time spent with his family.
