Howard Albert was born on January 23, 1931, to John and Clara (Krueger) Mix in St. Cloud. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Howard grew up in the St. Cloud area before spending several years in Oregon and later returning to Carlos. He attended high school in Alexandria until enlisting in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged after two years of service, due to the unexpected death of his father and to take over the family farm. Howard was united in marriage to Arlene Hanson on June 29, 1953, at Spruce Hill Lutheran Church. While working for the Chicago and North Western Railroad, they lived in Minneapolis, Montgomery, and Mason City, Iowa. They moved to St. Louis Park in 1965, where he remained until retiring from the railroad in the late 1980s. Following retirement, Howard and Arlene built a home on Lake Irene near Miltona. They also spent many winters in Arizona, where Howard especially enjoyed hiking. After Arlene’s passing on May 20, 2010, Howard continued living in Miltona until 2019, when he moved to Edgewood Senior Living in Alexandria. Throughout his life, he was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, served on the Spruce Hill Cemetery Board, and was involved with the Rose City Threshing Board. Howard took pride in mowing and landscaping and, in earlier years, enjoyed snowmobiling and deer hunting. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Edlard Hertwig.
Howard is survived by his two daughters, Julie (Reid) Droegemueller of St. Cloud and Jill Mix (Mark vanderMolen) of Kihei, Hawaii; brother, John Mix of Madison, Wisconsin; two sisters, Shirley Gilmore of Silver Springs, Maryland and Janet Hamilton of Columbus, Ohio; three grandsons, Ryan (Erin) Droegemueller, Seth Droegemueller, and Scott (Nicole) Droegemueller; five great-grandchildren, Hailey, Ashlyn, Harper, Adam, and Tommy; along with several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Reid, Ryan, Seth, Scott, Hailey Droegemueller, and Mark vanderMolen. Honorary pallbearers are the remaining great-grandchildren.
