George William was born on June 13, 1937, to Clifford and Anna (Gruber) Davis in St. Peter. He embraced hard work from an early age, running a paper route in junior high, working at a grocery store and a local theater in high school. He proudly saved enough to buy a 1947 Ford by his junior year. After graduating from St. Peter High School, he worked at Carney Company in Mankato before attending college, where he spent summers working back at Carney. During one of those summers while counseling at Norway Point Camp, he met the love of his life, Cecilia. They were united in marriage on April 11, 1959, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in North Minneapolis. He graduated from college in 1960.
His career began at the Retail Credit Company in Mankato before he found his passion in education. He taught social studies and coached wrestling in Lamberton, then spent three years in Wood Lake before earning his School Administration License through NDSU and Mankato State. He served as principal in Wood Lake for eight years before becoming principal at Cottonwood Schools for 21 years, retiring in 1994.
In 1969, George and Cecilia bought a lot on Lake Aaron near Millerville, and after retiring built their forever home. He was active in the Millerville Sportsmen’s Club and Brandon Lions, always giving back to the community. Together, they embraced adventure, joining snowmobile and camping clubs and traveling extensively. They visited all 50 states, every Canadian province and territory except Nunavut, and many foreign countries, enjoying timeshares in Mexico and Branson, Missouri. Above all, family was his greatest joy. He cherished time with his children and grandchildren, especially watching them grow.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Grace Kohler, Harry Davis, and Ida Lundborg.
George is survived by his wife of 65 years, Cecilia; two sons, Jeff (Janet Ehlers) Davis of Brooklyn Center and Mike (Kari) Davis of St. Cloud; daughter, Laura (Todd) Kor of Rochester; five grandchildren, Brandon (Kjersten) Davis, Ciera Davis; Benjamin (Ali) Kor, Nathan (Michaela) Kor, and Jennifer Kor; two great-grandchildren, Lainey Kor, Maxine Davis, along with baby girl Kor on the way; sister-in-law, Joan Davis; along with many nieces and nephews.
Serving as casket bearers will be Michael Davis, Jeffrey Davis, Brandon Davis, Todd Kor, Benjamin Kor, Nathan Kor, Don Silbernagel, and Dan Lundborg.
