Gaylord John was born on May 26, 1942, to Floyd and Gladys (Smith) Bober in Jackson, Michigan. He grew up in rural Jackson and graduated from Napoleon High School in 1960. He continued his education at Jackson Junior College and later transferred to Michigan State University. There he met his future bride, Marilyn Adair. They were united in marriage on April 4, 1964, in East Lansing, Michigan. In 1965, he graduated from Michigan State University with his B.S. degree in Wildlife Biology. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged and soon began his career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In 1971, he and Marilyn were blessed through adoption with a son, Kirk. They later moved from Michigan, to Colorado, and finally Minnesota where Gaylord worked at the Morris Wetlands Management District until his retirement in 2001. Gaylord was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the observation of all forms of wildlife, including the native prairie grasses, and the many migratory birds that call Minnesota home. He enjoyed his dogs, lake home, and especially, his purple martins, keeping detailed records of their coming and going each year for many years. Most of all, he enjoyed being home with wife of over 61 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Gaylord is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son, Kirk (Cindy) Bober of Cyrus; three grandchildren, Tyler, Lauren, and Jade; three brothers, Gary (Sharon) Bober of Cheboygan, Michigan, Stanley (Val) Bober of Brooklyn, Michigan, and Philip Bober of Jackson, Michigan; three sisters, Joy (Steve) Travis of Paw Paw, Michigan, Laurie (Timothy) Roffler of Parma, Michigan, and Becky (Dan) Childs of Hanover, Michigan; along with many nieces and nephews.
