Eugene C. Woida, Jr., age 78, a resident of Urbank, died Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Knute Nelson in Alexandria.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Urbank with Fr. LeRoy Scheierl officiating. Music will be provided by the church choir and Angie Thoennes, Becky Barrows and Samantha Woida. Burial will take place at the church cemetery with full military honors accorded by the Millerville American Legion - Inspiration Peak Post #527.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday with a 7 p.m. prayer service, followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary at the church. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service.

Eugene Carl was born June 15, 1931, at home on the family farm in Leaf Mountain Township. He was the third of eleven children of Eugene and Mary (Pischke) Woida. He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Urbank. He attended school in Urbank and later in the country schoolhouse just across the field from the family home. At age 21, Gene entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany, where he met Karola Wagner in 1953. They were united in marriage on November 21, 1955, in Germany. To this union three children were born: Donald, Ruth and Frederick. In 1957, Gene went to work for Graco Company in Minneapolis as a machine set-up person and later as a foreman. In 1971, the family moved to Urbank and Gene opened his own repair shop, which he operated until 2007. Gene always made time for his family and friends. He especially loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing, throwing horseshoes, and watching the Urbank Bombers play baseball. He had a passion for music and loved to play the concertina for his family and community events. Church and community service were very important to Gene. He served on the Urbank city council and in past years, served as chaplain for the VFW, visiting veterans in the hospital. He was an active member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Lions Club, recently receiving the Melvin Jones Award

Gene is survived by his wife, Karola; two sons, Don (Mary) of Brandon and Fred (Teresa) of Urbank; a daughter, Ruth (Don) Dickey of Brandon; eight grandchildren, Angie (Daryl) Thoennes, Becky (Craig) Barrows, Samantha Woida, Heather Dickey, Greg Dickey, Erica Woida, Skye Woida and Cody Woida; three great-grandchildren, Christopher Woida, Thomas Barrows and Hailey Thoennes; two sisters, Esther Ryan of the Twin Cities and Elreen (Harold) Roers of Urbank; six brothers, Richard (Eunice) of Wayzata, Clifford (Pat) of Excelsior, Leonard (Kathy) of Bloomington, Myron (Sharon) of Millerville, Aloysius (Betty) of Eagle Bend and George (Eunice) of Vining; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Woida of the Twin Cities.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Benedict and Phillip; and brother-in-law, Bill Ryan.

Pallbearers will be Scott Woida, Sam Woida, Robin Woida, Victor Roers, Rory Roers and Lewis Roers.
