Eleanor Jane was born on January 25, 1939, to Charles and Clara (Roth) Schuneman in Belle River Township. She was baptized on February 26, 1939, and confirmed on June 8, 1952, both at Immanuel Lutheran Church, now Trinity Lutheran Church, in Carlos. Eleanor attended country school and continued her education at Central High School in Alexandria, graduating in 1956. During her senior year, she worked as a bookkeeper at the hospital in Alexandria before beginning her career at First State Bank in Carlos.
Eleanor was united in marriage to Dean Yohnke on June 4, 1960, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Carlos. Together, they made their home next to the Yohnke family farm in Carlos Township for a few years before settling on the farm in 1962. Eleanor continued working at the bank in various roles while also raising their family and helping with the farm. She drove tractor and helped feed and milk cows alongside Dean. They stopped milking cows in 1996, but continued the other farming operations for many years, eventually sharing the farm with the next generations.
Eleanor was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Carlos, where she was active in the church women’s group and Trinity Quilters. She also enjoyed participating with the LWML group at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Parkers Prairie and served as an election judge in Carlos Township for many years.
Eleanor enjoyed fishing during the summer and spearing in the winter. She loved watching birds, playing cards, putting together puzzles, tending her vegetable and flower gardens, and making an occasional trip to the casino. In retirement, she and Dean enjoyed traveling throughout the United States.
Eleanor was often found in the kitchen baking, canning, or cooking. She was especially known for baking and decorating cakes for many family birthdays and special occasions. She was also well known for always having M&M’s nearby, with peanut being her favorite. Above all, Eleanor loved spending time with her family and especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in sports and school programs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dean; brothers, Harlan, Merle, George, Richard, and infant Willis Schuneman; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Robert Pederson; sister-in-law Irene Schuneman-Tvrdik; brother-in-law Don Yohnke; and nephew Chris Yohnke.
