Dorothy M. Schmidt, age 95, of Alexandria, formerly of Parkers Prairie, died on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at Alex Assisted Living under the care of St. Croix Hospice.
Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m., Saturday, September 17, 2022, at St. William’s Catholic Church in Parkers Prairie with Fr. Jeff Ethen officiating. Music is provided by Paul Malecha. Entombment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Alexandria.
Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church.
Dorothy Mae was born on April 5, 1927, to Anton and Christine (Zavadil) Barta in Spruce Hill Township. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River. She attended District #64 Country School in Spruce Hill Township. Dorothy was united in marriage to Reinhart P. Schmidt on May 22, 1951, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church. To this union, the couple was blessed with six children. Together they farmed for 17 years in Effington Township before moving to Parkers Prairie in the fall of 1968. Dorothy worked as a nurse’s aide at St. William’s Living Center for nearly 20 years, retiring in 1989. She was a member of St. William’s Catholic Church for 50 plus years. While her husband was alive, they enjoyed traveling on many bus tours around the U.S. and Canada. They also had a home on Lake Miltona where they enjoyed family get togethers. She loved cooking for and visiting her children and grandchildren. Dorothy enjoyed writing letters, embroidery, crocheting rugs and playing Solitaire. She will long be remembered for her warm smile and sweet disposition.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Reinhart; brother, Raymond; daughter, Patty; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Diana (Doug) Harstad, John (Ruth Ann) Schmidt, David Schmidt, Paul Schmidt, and Sherrie (Steve) Emrud; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers are her grandsons, Jason Harstad, Ryan Harstad, Alan Harstad, Johnathan Harstad, Tony Emrud, Jacob Zimmerli, Daniel Zimmerli, and James Andersen. Honorary pallbearers are her granddaughters, Marie Odermann, Christine Augustine, Emma Schwebach, Joy Gabr, and Amy Weltin.
