Donald Lawrence Nolting

Donald L. Nolting, age 92, of Alexandria, died on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m., on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Church of St. Mary with Fr. Matthew Kuhn presiding. Interment will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Full military honors will be accorded by the Minnesota Honor Guard, and the Veteran’s Memorial Honor Guard.

The visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church.

Donald Lawrence was born on November 28, 1933, to Elmer L. and Ella E. (Teigland) Nolting in Shevlin, Minnesota. Don was eight years old at the time of the Pearl Harbor bombing in 1941. He spent his childhood growing up in Shevlin where he attended grade school. Don graduated from Bagley High School in 1951. Following his education, Don worked for a potato and livestock farmer to realize his future would not include farming. At this time, MN/DOT started a highway improvement project in Bagley, so he got a job with the engineering department. This type of employment appealed to Don and when the Bagley project was completed, he stayed on with MN/DOT in the district office in Bemidji. He entered the military service in September of 1954, serving in the U.S. Army. The two years stationed in Seattle gave him the opportunity to think about his future. Upon his honorable discharge, Don furthered his education at North Dakota State University where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering. He worked for both Wright and Polk Counties as assistant county engineer. Don was united in marriage to Mary Normandin on September 2, 1967, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Crookston. He joined Dick Widseth and Howard Smith in Crookston and formed Widseth, Smith and Nolting and later expanded into Alexandria. He spent most of his career in Alexandria as a civil engineer. Following his retirement, Don enjoyed life with friends and family.

He was a member of Church of St. Mary, Alexandria Evening Lions, Elks Lodge, American Legion, Eagles, and was past president of Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and garage sales.

He is preceded in death by his parents; infant son Christopher; and wife, Mary on June 22, 2026.

Don is survived by his daughter, Angele Anderson of Alexandria; son, Joseph Nolting of Alexandria; granddaughters, Nicole and Stephanie Anderson both of Alexandria; sister, Virginia Hegre of Waconia; brother, Vernon (Jean) Nolting of Moorhead; sister-in-law, Dolores Normandin of Fargo, North Dakota; brother-in-law, Michael Normandin of Crookston; as well as several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Urnbearers are his family.
