Donald J. Hiebel, age 93, of Alexandria, died on Monday, September 9, 2024, at Alomere Health in Alexandria.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, September 16, 2024, at Church of St. Mary with Fr. Dan Ruprecht officiating. Music is provided by pianist, Luke VanOverbeke and cantor, Erin Takle. Interment will take place at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Cemetery, Lowry. Full military honors will be accorded by the Minnesota Honor Guard, American Legion Post #87, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #936, Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter #235, and the Marine Corps League Detachment #1409.
The visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church.
Donald Joseph Hiebel was born on March 18, 1931, to John R. and Anne E. (Keller) Hiebel in rural Alexandria. He was baptized and confirmed at the Church of St. Mary in Alexandria. Donald grew up in Lake Mary Township, where he attended Country School District #24, and graduated from Alexandria Central High School in 1949. Following his education, Don was drafted into the U.S. Army. While home on leave following basic training, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Prchal on October 6, 1952, at St. John Nepomuk Church. He continued his Army service in Korea and following his honorable discharge in 1953, Don reunited with Lorraine in Minneapolis.
Don began his career as a journeyman with Minnegasco in 1954 and concluded there upon his retirement in 1993. Together they raised their family in Bloomington. His wife, Lorraine died in January 2014. Donald relocated to Grand Arbor in Alexandria in October of 2016.
Don was a member of Church of St. Mary and the Alexandria American Legion Post #87. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards (especially cribbage) and was known for his sense of humor. He also enjoyed indulging in Miller High Life beer and popcorn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Lorraine.
Don is survived by his daughter, Cathy (Rick) Mazanec of Eagan; son, Paul (Randy Durbin) Hiebel of Minneapolis; brother, Ken Hiebel of Plymouth; sister, Anne Marie (Paul) Tatum of Dallas, Texas; two grandchildren, Becky (David) O’Keefe and Kevin Mazanec; two great-grandchildren, Nora and Mason O’Keefe; along with many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Paul Hiebel, Kevin Mazanec, Rick Mazanec, David O’Keefe, John Belford, and Paul Tatum.
