Daryl Jay Berghuis

Daryl J. Berghuis, age 87, of Alexandria, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, August 24, 2026, at his home under the care of Moments Hospice.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Lake Community Church with Pastor Forrest Erickson presiding. Private family interment will take place at Holland Township Cemetery, Prinsburg.

The visitation is 4-6 p.m. on Friday, September 11th at Lake Community Church and will continue one hour prior to the service.

Daryl Jay was born on January 22, 1939, to Henry and Bernice (Strootman) Berghuis in Prinsburg, MN. He grew up in Prinsburg and attended Central Minnesota Christian School through the 9th grade. He graduated from West Christian High School in Hull, Iowa, and Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with a degree in education. While in college, Daryl worked with his family business, Berghuis Road Construction. He was united in marriage to Connie Ledeboer on June 17, 1959, at the Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg. Following his education, he and Connie moved to Bellflower, California, where he taught school and coached football and basketball at Valley Christian High School. In the late 1960’s the family moved to Faribault, Minnesota, where Daryl joined the family road construction business. In 1972, the Berghuis family consolidated the businesses, and Daryl and Connie moved to Alexandria. One of the major accomplishments of the family business was the building of Interstate 94 from Fargo to Monticello, along with many other Minnesota roads. He later purchased Alexandria Concrete, which he owned until he sold the businesses and retired. Daryl was a member of Word Alone Fellowship and was a former member of Alexandria Rotary Club, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, and Viking Sportsmen. His hobbies included hunting, extensive traveling, riding his Gold Wing motorcycle, and swimming. Daryl and Connie loved living on Lake Darling and also in Mesa, AZ. The lake and the desert were his happy places. His family was of utmost importance to him, and he treasured time with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents; toddler sister, Rosie; kindred brother, Scott Vander Molen; and son-in-law, Paul Hedine.

Daryl is survived by his wife of 67 years, Connie; son, Todd (Elisa Harmon) Berghuis of Baxter; daughter, Lizbeth Hedine of Alexandria; sister, Mary (Ron) Mulder of Jackson; five grandchildren, Ashley, Ben, Silas, Isaac, and Kiley; two great-grandchildren, Abraham and Roosevelt; along with many nieces and nephews.

Urnbearers are Isaac Gorham, Ben Berghuis, Silas Berghuis, Kiley Gorham, and Ashley Borud.
