Darwin "Buddy" A. Johnson, age 62, of Alexandria, died following complications after a courageous battle with Lymphoma, on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 6, 2021, at Alexandria Covenant Church in Alexandria with Rev. Trinity Opp officiating. Music will be provided by Keith Martinson. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Alexandria.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Sunday at Lind Family Funeral Home in Alexandria and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Darwin was born on January 17, 1959, to Russell and Phyllis (Rambow) Johnson in Alexandria. He grew up on the family farm in Alexandria Township where he earned a deep appreciation for his family farming background. Darwin graduated from Jefferson High School in 1977. He attended Moorhead State where he graduated with a degree in Foreign Language and Business Education. Darwin began his teaching career in Hendrum and Halstad School Districts. In the early 1980’s, he taught Spanish in Alexandria and while teaching, earned his master’s degree in Education from the University of St. Thomas. Darwin took some time off from teaching, to achieve his law degree from the University of Minnesota, where he graduated in 1993, and passed his bar exam in 1994. Darwin returned to teaching, both in Brandon and Osakis. He was united in marriage to Lynn Fitzgerald on December 27, 1996, at Salem Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids. Following their marriage, they lived in Alexandria, and he continued teaching. Darwin accepted a full-time teaching position at the Osakis High School in 2009, where he taught until the time of his diagnosis of cancer, in January of 2021.
Darwin is a member of Alexandria Covenant Church. He was a life-long learner, all 62 ½ years. He enjoyed walking, cross-country skiing, and was very creative. He had the gift of writing, including writing plays, and making special gifts for his family. His family was always first, and he loved watching his children, nieces, and nephews in their many activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Darwin is survived by his wife of 24 years, Lynn; four children, Camille (fiancé, Zach Kantor) Johnson of Stillwater, Bryant Johnson of Minneapolis, Matthew Johnson, and Lexi Johnson both of Alexandria; two brothers, Don (Lynn) Johnson and Darrell (Beth) Johnson both of Alexandria; five nieces and nephews, Heather (Nic) Johnson Sauer, Kyle (Heather) Johnson, Zakary Zwiers, Thomas Zwiers, and Natalie Zwiers; sister-in-law, Patti (John) Zwiers of Fergus Falls; and a host of friends.
Pallbearers are Heather Johnson Sauer, Kyle Johnson, Zakary Zwiers, Thomas Zwiers, Natalie Zwiers, Zach Kantor, Heather Johnson and Nic Sauer.
Memorials preferred.
