Cindy Ann Fortune

Cindy Ann (Maki) Fortune, 68, died on July 17, 2026, under the care of St. Croix Hospice.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, August 21, 2026, at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. Interment will take place at Arrowhead Cemetery, Brookston.

The visitation is one hour prior to the service.

Born to Helen (Palmi) and Ed Maki, the youngest of five, Cindy was raised in Brookston, Minnesota and graduated from Albrook High School.

Cindy spent most of her adult life in Floodwood. She was a free spirit and was a lover of music, gardening and was a very talented artist. Cindy was a loving and generous soul, and shared laughs and love with anyone around her.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Ed; brothers, Gerald, Kenneth Sr, and Archie; niece, Christie; brother-in-law, Duane Karkiainen; and life partner, Gary Karkiainen.

Cindy is survived by her daughters, Jessica (Brian) Sole, and Siama (Aaron) Palkki; grandchildren, Maverick (Joanna), Maguire, Joshua, Brenden, Olivia, Terrance, Presley, and Taylor; great granddaughter Pandora; sister, Lola Elstad; nephews, Len (Jody), Ken (Lisa), Jerry, Tim, and Adam; niece, Brandy; sisters-in-law, Yvonne (Andy) Watson, Juliann Fortune (and family) and Donna Fortune (and family); feline companion, Otto; along with several great nieces, great nephews and a host of friends.
