Bette Reed

Bette Jane Reed, 68, died peacefully in Alexandria with her family close by on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015.

Born Aug. 22, 1947, in Warren, Minn., to Arnold and Edna (Ross) Hanson, Bette grew up on the family sugar beet farm near Crookston, Minn. She was confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Crookston in 1960 and graduated from Crookston High School in 1965. She attended Moorhead State College for two years.

At MSC, she met the love of her life, John "Jack" Reed. They were married on April 1, 1967, and moved to Easton, Penn., where they lived for seven years. During that time, they had two children, Jeffrey and Tracy. In 1974, the family returned to the Midwest. The following year, they bought a home in rural Carlos, where Bette and Jack have lived ever since.
Over the years, Bette worked as a bookkeeper for several plumbing, heating and air conditioning businesses in Alexandria, retiring in 2006, from Ellingson Plumbing and Heating. In 2008, she became the church secretary for Faith Lutheran in Miltona, where she was a member. She held that post until 2014. At Faith, Bette was also a member of the bell choir and the ukulele group Two on Tuesday.

Bette loved being outdoors. She particularly liked biking and cross-country skiing. She was a water-skier throughout her life and still took spins around the lake when she was in her 60s. An avid gardener, Bette's gardens were always as beautiful as they were bountiful.
More than anything, though, Bette enjoyed being with those she loved. Vacations with Jack, visits with her children and grandchildren, time with extended family, outings with friends a" these were the joy of her life. She was a warm and loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin and friend. Bette was loved deeply, and she will be missed deeply.

Bette is survived by her husband of 48 years, Jack; two children, Jeff (Jackie) Reed of Alexandria and Tracy (Eric) Will of Rochester, Minn.; three sisters, Phyllis (Verne) Weiss of Wayzata, Minn., Karen (Gary) Landsem of Lake Park, Minn., Janis (Gary) Restad of Billings, Mont.; sister-in-law Marlene Hanson of Grand Forks, ND; two grandchildren, David and Nora; six nieces and five nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, Robert and Edna Reed; and brother, Duane Hanson.

Visitation will be at the Lind Family Funeral Home in Alexandria on Sunday, Oct. 4, 5-7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Miltona on Monday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. with visitation beginning one hour before.

Urnbearer is her son, Jeffrey Reed.

The family requests that memorial gifts be designated to cancer research at Mayo Clinic or to Hospice of Douglas County.
