Avita McWhorter, age 99 of Parkers Prairie, passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at the St. Williams Nursing Home in Parkers Prairie, MN.
On April 10, 1911, Avita was born to Carl and Therese (Budde) Bollig in Fenton, IA. She lived near Comfrey, MN until her marriage to Hugh Tyler McWhorter on May 1, 1939 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey. They lived in Onawa, IA and Darfur, MN before settling in Ward, S. Dakota in 1943. After a brief stay in Elkton, SD, they moved to Miltona, MN in 1957. Avita was an active member of St. Nicholas Church in Belle River and served for years as sacristan, CCD teacher and in the church choir. She also belonged to St. Ann's Sodality of the Christian Mothers. Avita has been a resident at St. Williams Assisted Living since 2001 and then the nursing home since 2009.
Avita was an active volunteer who drove Meals-on-Wheels with her husband for Miltona residents. She was also a volunteer for RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) where she went to visit nursing home residents to offer friendship and support. Some of Avita's hobbies included gardening, reading, crocheting and quilting. Blessed be her memory.
Avita is survived by her daughters, Therese (Gerald) Linton of Mt. Washington, KY, Helen (Steve) Zellmer of St. Paul and Patricia (Patrick) Harrison of Wadena; her sons, Hugh C. (Joy) McWhorter of Miltona and Paul McWhorter of St. Cloud; 13 grandchildren and 14 great, grandchildren; her brother, Paul (Rose) Bollig of Stillwater.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh in 1996, an infant granddaughter, Stephanie McWhorter; brothers, Charles & Eugene Bollig; sisters, Theodora Abel-McWhorter and Helen Bollig.
A Mass of Resurrection was held for Avita on Saturday, June 19 at 11 am at the St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River with Fr. LeRoy Scheierl officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery with honorary pallbearers her grand and great grandchildren. Active bearers were Michael, Scott and Daniel Zellmer, Gregory and Cory McWhorter and James Harrison.
Memorials are preferred to the family.
Arrangements were with the Lind Family Funeral Service of Parkers Prairie, MN.
