Melvin Ost, age 85, of Effington Township, died Friday, July 25, 2014, at Knute Nelson in Alexandria.

Funeral services are 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Parkers Prairie with Rev. Roger Krebs officiating. Music is provided by organist, Gloria Hollatz and vocalist, Dedra Zwieg. Burial is at Parkers Prairie Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the Parkers Prairie American Legion Post 219 and the Minnesota Honor Guard..

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Lind Family Funeral Home in Parkers Prairie and will continue one hour prior to the service at church.

Melvin Carl Ost was born January 21, 1929, to William and Martha (Krebs) Ost in Effington Township. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, North Effington. He attended Country School District 218. Following his education, he farmed with his father. He served in the U.S. Army from July 24, 1953 to June 25, 1955. Following his honorable discharge he returned home to farm. He was united in marriage to Della Noetzelman April 12, 1956, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, West Miltona. Following their marriage he worked on the family farm until he suffered a stroke March 1, 2012. Melvin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Board of Finance, Board of Trustee and sang in the choir. He served on the Effington Town Board as Treasurer for 36 years. He was a Dekalb Corn Dealer and was a member of the Parkers Prairie American Legion Post 219. Melvin liked hunting, fishing, spending time in the woods and cutting wood. He enjoyed music and liked to play the accordion. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family.

Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Delphine Voelker; and three brothers-in-law, Orve Voelker, Elmer Zinter and Orvin Jahnke.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Della; two children, Debbie (Ray) Bohn of Alexandria and Steven Ost of Parkers Prairie; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Zinter and Loraine Jahnke both of Parkers Prairie; two grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Dennis Behnke, Pat Bettin, Ted Bjerketvedt, Bruce Jahnke, Dale Koebernick and Dean Koebernick. Honorary pallbearer is Wallace Ziesemer.
