Gloria Funkhouser

Gloria M. Funkhouser, age 75, of Alexandria, died Sunday, May 8, 2016, at St. Cloud Hospital.

Memorial services are 1 p.m., Friday, May 13, 2016, at Lind Family Funeral Home in Alexandria with Rev. Justin Fenger officiating. Music is provided by pianist, Virginia Hegre.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m., Thursday at Lind Family Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the service.

Gloria Mae Funkhouser was born May 11, 1940, to Ernie and Myrtle (Torgelson) Gilsrud in Benson, Minnesota. She grew up in Appleton where she graduated from high school in 1958. She attended St. Olaf College for two years and graduated from Moorhead State University in 1962 with a degree in teaching. Following her education, she taught school in many cities including Elbow Lake, Glyndon, Cottonwood, Hoffman and Borup. While in Glyndon, she was united in marriage to Curtis Funkhouser on June 29, 1963, at Big Bend Lutheran Church in Big Bend City, rural Milan. After Borup, Gloria and Curt moved to Battle Lake and continued to expand their family. In 1970, they moved to Breckenridge where they lived for 31 years and where she taught piano lessons, both at home and at St. Mary's Catholic School. In 2001, they moved to Alexandria. Gloria was a member of Shalom Lutheran Church and was active in both church and personal Bible studies. She enjoyed playing the piano, quilting, puzzles, watching birds and playing cards with friends. She was also an accomplished seamstress and an avid reader.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Gloria is survived by her husband of 52 years, Curtis; son, Deryk (Beth) Funkhouser of Burnsville; three daughters, Sally (Edwin) Reynolds of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Chelci (Shannon) Gira of Nelson, and Angela (Edward) Jenks of Andover; 11 grandchildren, Amber (Hans) Decker, Sara Funkhouser, Olivia, Osiah, Jemiah and Jameil Reynolds, Trejton, Clayton and Abigail Forester, foster-grandson Matthew, Emma and Joshua Jenks; and great-grandson, Bentley Reynolds.

Urnbearers are her grandchildren, Olivia Reynolds, Amber Decker, Trejton Forester, and Emma Jenks. Honorary urnbearers are her remaining grandchildren and great-grandson.

Memorials preferred to Pioneer Public Television, Shalom Lutheran Church or Breckenridge Lutheran Church.
