George Mike “Shorty” was born on July 29, 1941, to George and Mary (Klein) Revering in Urbank.  He was baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Urbank and confirmed at St. William’s Catholic Church in Parkers Prairie.  He attended Parkers Prairie Public Schools and graduated in 1960.  Following his education, he served in the United States Navy from 1961-1965, in Hawaii and Japan.  Following his honorable discharge, Shorty returned to Parkers Prairie to work with his family at Midwest Telephone Company. He was united in marriage to Joyce Turchin on January 22, 1966, at St. William’s Catholic Church in Parkers Prairie.

In the late 60’s, Shorty started his own company called Revering Group where he traveled throughout the area installing switchboards for a variety of telephone companies.  In 1976, Shorty became General Manager/VP for Midwest/Osakis Telephone Company and worked there until his retirement. Together, Joyce and Shorty owned and operated Valley Telephone Company of Browns Valley, MN and Prairie Lumber in Parkers Prairie. A large portion of Shorty’s life involved helping to build Rural Cellular Corporation and Glacial Lakes Cellular which brought cellular communications to rural communities in Minnesota and South Dakota.

The love Shorty had for the community of Parkers Prairie was evident. He was a lifetime member of St. William’s Catholic Church where he served as a Trustee for 12 years. He served 44 years with the Parkers Prairie Lion’s Club and was recognized for his accomplishments as a Melvin Jones Fellow.  This is one of the highest awards given in Lions Clubs International! Shorty was also a member of the PP Sportsmen’s Club and a 20- year member of the Parkers Prairie Fire Department where he served as chief for several years in the mid 80’s. He was instrumental in shaping the fire department into what it is today. He also served on several boards which included Rural Cellular Corporation (Cellular 2000), Switch 2000, Onvoy, Glacial Lakes Cellular, Prairie Inn and Suites and Parkers Prairie Development Corporation.

He loved hunting and fishing Northern pike with his friends and traveled North America in pursuit of the 50- incher! Much of his spare time was spent at the deer cabin where he enjoyed farming and hunting with family.
