Donald Johnson

Donald R. Johnson, age 92, a resident on Lake Miltona, died Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at his home.

Funeral services are 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 28, 2015, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria with Rev. Hans Dahl officiating. Music is provided by Kim Byrne. Full Military Honors accorded by the Minnesota Honor Guard, Alexandria American Legion Post #87, Alexandria VFW Post #936 and VVA Rifle Squad Chapter 235. Private family burial will take place at Spruce Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m., Sunday at Lind Family Funeral Home in Alexandria and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Donald Reynold Johnson was born October 12, 1922, to Hjalmer and Hannah (Clark) Johnson in Spruce Hill Township. Don was baptized at Spruce Hill Church and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Miltona. He graduated from Alexandria High School in 1941. Following his education, Don worked in carpentry in Rockford, Illinois before moving to Minneapolis to work at Honeywell. He entered the U. S. Army in November of 1942, and served in the 9th Armored Division. He was Sergeant in Reconnaissance during the Battle of the Bulge, and was a Purple Heart Recipient. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Don went into carpentry with his father. He was united in marriage to Mildred Beilke in June of 1948, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria. In January of 1949, they moved to Fargo where Don joined his brother, Gordy in the plastering business. The two brothers formed the Johnson Brothers Plastering Company in 1951. Following Don's retirement in 1982, he and his wife returned to live on Lake Miltona where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf. Don was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and a member of the Alexandria Country Club from 1982 -2013.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gordon Johnson, and sister, Hazel Hillesheim.

Don is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mildred; two daughters, Kathy (Doug) Smith of Minnetonka and Pam (Tommy) Rubenstein of Cable, Wisconsin; son, Craig (Lori) Johnson of Miltona; two grandsons, Chad Nowak and Scott Nowak; and two sisters, Leona Galaziewski and Doris Lund.
Pallbearers are Chad Nowak, Scott Nowak, Tommy Rubenstein, Doug Smith, Mike Lukes and Craig Johnson.
